Esta é uma das mais belas memórias dos inícios da IF, nos anos 80. John Cale já a tinha gravado antes, mas a versão incluída em Music for a New Society é muito mais sentida.



Entretanto, descobri que também John Cale gravou uma versão de God only knows (Beach Boys), durante as sessões para o álbum Helen of Troy (1975), com Brian Eno nos sintetizadores. A cover acabou por não ser aproveitada para o alinhamento final do disco, mas haverá alguém que a tenha ou saiba onde posso encontrá-la(bootleg ?). Conhecendo Cale, há todas as razões para esperar um "God only knows" transcendente.
